Welcome to the wild world of Technology Readiness Levels, or TRLs, where ideas evolve into fully functioning technologies! Originally developed by NASA in terms of technology maturity scale, TRLs have been incorporated into our Impact Jersey Scheme in the way we understand projects and maturity levels. This is a great way for us to understand how we can track progress what level a project enters our programme, and what level they exit. But more importantly, how rapid did the project accelerate from one level to the next!
So, if you’ve ever wondered how a simple concept blossoms into something you can’t live without, buckle up! We’re about to take a rollercoaster ride through the nine exciting levels of technological development.
TRL 1: The “Eureka!” Moment
At TRL 1, it’s all about the lightbulb moment. This is where our journey begins, in the minds of our brilliant scientists and innovators. Here, it’s just an idea, floating around, waiting to be captured on paper. Imagine a scientist shouting, “Eureka!” in a lab – that’s TRL 1.
TRL 2: The Sandbox
Next, we dig into the sandbox of experimentation. TRL 2 is where ideas start getting their hands dirty, quite literally. It’s all about exploring the basics. Think of it like doodling on the back of a napkin but with more science and a lot more scribbles.
TRL 3: The Proof of “Hey, This Might Work!”
Moving on to TRL 3, we’re testing our idea in the real world, well, sort of. It’s like saying, “Hey, this might actually work!” as you see your concept perform outside of your imagination for the first time. It’s still rough, but the excitement is real.
TRL 4: The Lab Rat
At TRL 4, our technology becomes a lab rat. This is where serious testing starts. We’re talking prototypes, lots of coffee, and a few “back to the drawing board” moments. It’s the first time the idea really gets put through the paces.
TRL 5: The Nursery
TRL 5 is like sending your tech to nursery. It’s matured enough to interact with the real world, albeit in a controlled environment. Here, we start to see if our tech plays well with others and fits into the ecosystem it’s meant for.
TRL 6: The Field Trip
Now we’re off to a field trip at TRL 6. Our technology steps out into the real environment for the first time. It’s a bit like watching a child ride a bike without training wheels—thrilling but nerve-wracking!
TRL 7: The Dress Rehearsal
TRL 7 is the dress rehearsal. Our tech is almost ready for the prime time. It’s being tested in real-world conditions, the final checks before the big debut. It’s about polishing and fixing any last-minute glitches.
TRL 8: The Ball
At TRL 8, our technology is Cinderella, ready for the ball. It’s polished, tested, and ready to meet the world. This is where it proves it can handle the spotlight and deliver on its promises.
TRL 9: The Graduation
Finally, TRL 9 – Graduation Day! Our technology is now fully mature; it’s deployed and operational. It’s out there, solving problems and making lives easier, just as it was envisioned back at TRL 1.
So there you have it!
From a spark of genius to a fully operational beacon of innovation, the journey through the TRL zones is as thrilling as it is complex. Whether you’re a tech aficionado or just curious about how gadgets around you come to life, understanding TRLs gives you a great perspective on the lifecycle of technologies that shape our world.
